ChatGPT free tier: is it enough for writing?

In short
For drafts, ideas, editing and summaries, the free tier is the sensible place to start before paying for a dedicated writing platform. Our quiz points here first for that reason.
What it costs
- Free: yes. It uses a smaller default model with caps that are not clearly published. Third-party reviews disagree on the exact limits (unconfirmed). A review updated 29 September 2026 says ads launched in the UK on 11 August 2026 for logged-in adults on the free and Go tiers (source).
- Cheapest paid: ChatGPT Go, reported at about £7 a month in the UK by a third party (source); other sources say £6 to £8. Confirm at checkout.
- Official page: chatgpt.com/pricing.
Suits
Drafting, brainstorming, editing and research starters at no cost.
Does not suit
Steady high-volume production, anyone who wants no ads or a guaranteed model, or anyone entering private or sensitive data.
What reviewers complain about
Trustpilot score 1.6 of 5 from 3,876 reviews on the day we checked (Trustpilot). Trustpilot does not fact-check reviews. Two recurring complaints:
- Ignoring instructions, for example "it frequently ignores explicit instructions from the user."
- Usage limits, for example a paying user: "since chat moved to a 5 hour max usage it is basically useless."
